New Forms, New Voices: Michalis Ioannou

Preview

Rooted in the field of painting, Michalis Ioannou’s work investigates the complex relationship between humans and the natural world, focusing on how landscapes are reconstructed both materially and conceptually. The process often begins with temporary compositions of natural and artificial materials - such as stones and wood - which serve as a catalyst for painterly inquiry. Rather than treating painting as a tool for simple representation, the practice reinterprets the very construction of the image and nature itself. The pictorial surface is frequently organized into distinct zones or sections, operating as different states or shifts of a single formal idea.

Through this method, the work frames nature as both a constructed entity and a lived experience, bridging the gap between the local material environment and broader questions within contemporary artistic discourse. The resulting compositions examine spatial organization, balance, and the nuances of human intervention, inviting viewers to consider the landscape, not as a static backdrop, but as an evolving field shaped by perception and interaction.

Michalis Ioannou is a visual artist whose primary medium is painting. He holds a degree in Architecture from the National Technical University of Athens and is currently completing his third year of studies in the Department of Fine Arts at the Cyprus University of Technology. His practice explores the natural landscape as a constructed and evolving field, drawing from natural and artificial materials to examine issues of spatial organization and the human relationship with the environment.

125 Space is proud to present New Forms, New Voices, a group exhibition showcasing the work of eleven emerging artists selected from a competitive open call that highlighted the vibrant and diverse talent currently shaping the local art scene.

As a platform committed to supporting emerging talent, 125 Space provides a professional context in which new artists can present their work and engage with collectors, curators, and the wider creative community. New Forms, New Voices reflects a dedicated interest in how these artists are redefining visual language through rigorous experimentation, material exploration, and critical engagement with contemporary conditions. While the selected works respond, both explicitly and intuitively, to urgent questions of identity, place, and cultural inheritance, they remain firmly open to broader global dialogues, demonstrating how new voices contribute to ongoing conversations within the international artistic community.
