New Forms, New Voices: Katerina Efstratiou
Katerina Efstratiou bridges the gap between traditional Cypriot textile heritage and contemporary woven design. Drawing inspiration from the island’s landscapes, architectural forms, and social rhythms, she translates everyday observations into complex material structures. Central to her work is the Fytiotiko embroidery technique, which she treats, not as a static historical artifact, but as a living process capable of evolution. Whether explicitly present in the construction, or subtly embedded within the texture and colour, these traditional methods facilitate a dialogue between heritage and modernity.
Efstratiou combines deep material sensitivity with rigorous experimentation, merging traditional knowledge with contemporary perspectives to explore how textiles can carry memory and cultural identity. Her woven forms serve as a bridge, allowing ancient craftsmanship to exist within new visual languages, while remaining responsive to the present moment.
Katerina Efstratiou is a textile designer and weaver based in Nicosia, Cyprus, holding an MA in Textile Design from the University of Brighton. Her studio practice focuses on the preservation and reinterpretation of traditional Cypriot weaving, particularly Fytiotiko embroidery, through a contemporary lens. Beyond her independent work, she undertakes commissioned projects, collaborates with other designers, and actively teaches textile workshops. Her work has been featured in various group exhibitions across Cyprus, reflecting her commitment to sustaining Cypriot weaving as a living, evolving craft.
125 Space is proud to present New Forms, New Voices, a group exhibition showcasing the work of eleven emerging artists selected from a competitive open call that highlighted the vibrant and diverse talent currently shaping the local art scene.
As a platform committed to supporting emerging talent, 125 Space provides a professional context in which new artists can present their work and engage with collectors, curators, and the wider creative community. New Forms, New Voices reflects a dedicated interest in how these artists are redefining visual language through rigorous experimentation, material exploration, and critical engagement with contemporary conditions. While the selected works respond, both explicitly and intuitively, to urgent questions of identity, place, and cultural inheritance, they remain firmly open to broader global dialogues, demonstrating how new voices contribute to ongoing conversations within the international artistic community.
