New Forms, New Voices: Anastasia Antoniou
Anastasia Antoniou’s practice investigates the intricate layers of identity, origin, and the human condition, through a diverse range of multimedia approaches. Drawing directly from family photographic archives, observations of the Cypriot countryside, and personal history, her work seeks to establish a resonant connection between the viewer and the artwork. By utilizing painting, hand stitching, and weaving, she creates tactile environments that invite audiences to recognize their own memories and emotions within her compositions.
Colour plays a critical role in her portraiture, serving as a dual vehicle for expressing the artist’s internal emotional state, or, in some cases, reflecting the distinct personality and energy of the depicted subject. This deliberate use of hue transforms the portrait from a mere likeness into a psychological landscape. Her focus on the body, gender identity, and the concept of ruination is rendered through these expressive, hands-on methods, emphasizing the fragility and resilience inherent in human experience. The work operates as a bridge between the personal and the universal, encouraging a dialogue about how we construct and deconstruct our sense of self through material and memory.
Anastasia Antoniou (b.2000) is a queer visual artist based in Nicosia, Cyprus, specializing in painting, weaving, hand stitching, and mixed media. She completed a Foundation Course in 2023 and an HND in Fine Arts in 2025 at the Aigaia School of Art and Design, where her work was featured in student showcases. Currently in her fourth year of a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts, she continues to explore themes of gender and identity through experimental material practices.
125 Space is proud to present New Forms, New Voices, a group exhibition showcasing the work of eleven emerging artists selected from a competitive open call that highlighted the vibrant and diverse talent currently shaping the local art scene.
As a platform committed to supporting emerging talent, 125 Space provides a professional context in which new artists can present their work and engage with collectors, curators, and the wider creative community. New Forms, New Voices reflects a dedicated interest in how these artists are redefining visual language through rigorous experimentation, material exploration, and critical engagement with contemporary conditions. While the selected works respond, both explicitly and intuitively, to urgent questions of identity, place, and cultural inheritance, they remain firmly open to broader global dialogues, demonstrating how new voices contribute to ongoing conversations within the international artistic community.
