New Forms, New Voices: Chara Kontopoulou

Preview

Chara Kontopoulou constructs abstract landscapes where resin, paint, and texture merge to form organic, shifting compositions. By meticulously layering these materials, she achieves a sense of depth and subtle relief, creating luminous surfaces defined by delicate gestures. As the viewer changes position, the image transforms, offering a dynamic visual experience that evolves with every glance.

Each work is inspired by a specific place and a personal memory tied to moments of warmth and happiness. Resin serves a dual purpose here, acting as both the primary medium and a protective seal that encloses these traces beneath a glossy, immersive finish. The artworks actively respond to their surroundings, capturing and distorting reflections so that every interaction remains unique; in this process, the viewer becomes an integral part of the piece, their presence mirrored and reinterpreted within the surface. Through her art, Kontopoulou invites audiences to pause, observe, and feel, encouraging them to retrace their own serene moments. The paintings evoke deeply cherished memories, preserved within the material, yet forever linked to a profound sense of tranquillity and joy.

Chara Kontopoulou (b.1993) is a visual artist based in Cyprus who holds a BA in Fine Arts from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and an MA in Arts Management from the University of Manchester. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and art fairs across London, Manchester, Nicosia, and Athens, including notable presentations at MOMus and the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.

125 Space is proud to present New Forms, New Voices, a group exhibition showcasing the work of eleven emerging artists selected from a competitive open call that highlighted the vibrant and diverse talent currently shaping the local art scene.

As a platform committed to supporting emerging talent, 125 Space provides a professional context in which new artists can present their work and engage with collectors, curators, and the wider creative community. New Forms, New Voices reflects a dedicated interest in how these artists are redefining visual language through rigorous experimentation, material exploration, and critical engagement with contemporary conditions. While the selected works respond, both explicitly and intuitively, to urgent questions of identity, place, and cultural inheritance, they remain firmly open to broader global dialogues, demonstrating how new voices contribute to ongoing conversations within the international artistic community.
